People-watching

Updated: Mar 11

Rainbow sat on the bench under the sun, enjoying watching the people on the bridge setting love locks into the chain links. From her periphery, a man came to sit on the opposite side of the bench.

“It’s a beautiful day,” he said.

“Yes, it is.” Rainbow left it at that.

“Are you just sitting here people-watching?”

She felt annoyed. She didn’t come here to actually talk to the people near the park.

“Yes, I am.”

“Oh. Nice. I guess I’m doing the same thing.”

“Nice.”

He came closer. “You see that couple in the red?”

Rainbow’s eyebrows rose. “Yes…?”

“That guy came here last week with a different girl.”

“What! How would you know that?”

“‘Cause I people watch too.” His brown eyes glittered in the sunlight.

“Yeah, right. I’ve never seen you here before.”

The guy chuckled. “Maybe, but I actually know the dude. He’s my roommate. Brings a different girl here every week, does a whole bit about new beginnings and finding love. Then he bangs ‘em at their house and goes on his way.”

Rainbow’s eyebrows were at her hairline. “Wow, that’s...awful. And what do you do? You don’t stop him?”

“Well, why do you think I’m here right now?” At her dumbfounded look, the man burst into laughter. “Nah, it’s none of my business. He can do what he wants.”

Rainbow felt an inkling of anger. “Have you ever heard the term ‘men are trash’? You should stop him from doing things like that.” With that, she turned away.

“I see your point, but still, it’s not my problem. If anything, the girls need some sense knocked into them. They fall for his crap every time, hook, line, and sinker. They can’t tell a real man from a fake one.”

“You’re just victim blaming now.”

“Maybe.”

“And if you asked me out right now, on this park bench, would I also be falling for fake crap?”

He smirked. “Again, maybe.”

Despite herself, she let out a small laugh. “You’re ridiculous.”

“And you’ll meet me at Spinelli's on 8th street at 7pm tomorrow?”

“I don’t even know your name.”

He held out a hand. “I’m Andy.”

She took it. “I’m Rainbow.”

He wasn’t even surprised.
